Did Jesus return during his generation?

Matthew 10:23, "When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes."

Matthew 16:28, I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

Matthew 24:34, Mark 13:30, and Luke 21:32, "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened."

According to Mathew, Mark, and Luke, Jesus gave several indications that his second coming would be during the generation which witnessed his first coming.

"Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth." (Ecclesiastes 7:3-4, KJV)
"Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 8:15, KJV)
